Self-taught, South African artist, Isabella Mostert, has been practicing art for 20 years. She chose a career in the performing arts, and nourished her self-expression through visual art. She realised from a young age that art fills her with joy, and states that to paint is one thing she cannot be without.
Isabella shares that through her art she creates glimpses of worlds beyond the familiar - “Landscapes of the dream world inviting the viewer to enter and linger…Offering an escape from the austerity of reality”. Inspired by renowned artists such as Keith Alexander and Gerhardt Richter, Isabella uses oil and canvas to create surreal visions that challenge the imagination and allow you to see something different every time you look.
“My paintings always begin with a realistic image. Thereafter, curiosity connects with colour and form and the work transforms into the abstract. With the application of each layer (or the stripping away of layers) I improvise until the inherent image reveals itself. In this process preconceptions fall away, and brush and pigment take on an energy of their own.”
Isabella’s alluring art captures both local and international attention. She has been featured in various South African magazines and has many commissioned artworks hanging in private homes and corporate spaces. Her artworks have sold extensively internationally – Amsterdam, Dubai, Ireland and Scotland, to name a few.
