Tanja Margetts is a self-taught artist, using acrylic, watercolour and oils to paint bold, captivating artworks that blend colour and emotion. Tanja shares that she has always been an art lover, “…fascinated by colour, shape and form. How art can change a room…can tell different stories to different people…can express emotions. And how varied art is”. However, it was just 4 years ago when she started her own art journey and has been creating part-time ever since. As a dental hygienist by profession, Tanja still makes time to paint.
Tanja expresses that she still has so much to learn, but in her 4 years as a practicing artist she has featured in multiple issues of International Artist Magazine and placed in the top 250 of the National Portrait Competition 2021.
Tanja’s desire to create is driven by her passion for colour and the ‘unusual’, and inspired by artists such as Norman Catherine, Schalk van der Merwe and Salvador Dali.
“I mostly do not plan an art piece. It paints itself. I never know what I am going to end up with. Which I find exciting. My artworks are varied. But I try to show emotion in each and every one. If a piece is sombre or angry colour will be my way of expressing hope, optimism, happiness etc. I would love anyone who looks at my art to see the emotion displayed. Other art pieces will be quirky or weird. This is to trigger a reaction, whether positive or negative. All are open to interpretation.”
